| Customer Reviews: Saved Our Ceiling June 21, 2010 Small House Small Budget 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We have an old, painted tin ceiling in our living room. It was rusted in spots from a water pipe that had burst. This was not evident while we were in the process of buying the house. As we later discovered, the ceiling had been painted over with a latex paint to conceal this fact. But very soon, the existing and ever-expanding rust areas caused the paint to flake off and reveal large areas of damage. The ceiling became so ugly it may well have been a deal-breaker if the rust spots had not been hidden. Still, we were hoping to salvage this nice architectural detail and not replace it with sheetrock. We ruled out attempting to take down sections of the tin, fearing we'd warp or tear it. As a last-ditch effort to hang onto the original turn-of-the century tin, we decided to experiment with Rustoleum Rust Reformer.
We knew we wouldn't be able to treat the rust on both sides. And due to the fragility of the material, we could only perform minimal rust removal on the exposed side. These rust spots were just lightly buffed and wiped down. There were a few places that actually had holes, having been eaten clear through by the rust. (Here we'd have the opportunity to apply a little of the Rustoleum Rust Reformer through the holes and onto the other side.)
We gently chipped away all the loose eggshell-colored paint and were ready to begin.
Pouring some of the material into a glass container, we took a paintbrush and coated all the rusted parts. It was easy to see the dark color of the rust conversion against the lighter painted areas. The cure time for the next step was only a few hours.
The dark, treated spots were painted over with a Rustoleum rust-inhibiting OIL paint. We felt that the last thing we wanted to do was apply anything water-based at this point. The oil-based paint would actually function as our primer. It would seal the area against the later application of a water-based compound. When the oil paint was dry, molding compound filled in the holes, shaped (as well as we could manage) to mimic the raised design on the tin.
The last step was to apply the best grade of acrylic paint we could find, colored to match the eggshell tint of the existing undamaged areas. (Acrylic paints are now recommended for tin ceilings, and acrylic can be used over oil paints.)
I'm kicking myself for not taking some "Before" photos, since the "After" results were so spectacular, much better than I had hoped.
While we might not have eradicated every bit of rust, especially on the inaccessible side, we feel we've given the ceiling years of extended life.
I was so impressed with this product that I went out and bought another container, so as always to have some on hand. In fact, I'm now kind of on the lookout for other things to try it out on.
I've given this product five stars since it performed in a stellar fashion in this specialized, somewhat quirky application
It seems to work,(for how long i dont know) March 31, 2010 bcom (USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just bought some of this rust reformer to use on a couple of trucks i had here around the house.I first tested it on one of my older Chevy trucks that is covered in surface rust.I shook up the bottle and dipped in my brush and covered a 2" square on the hood of my truck.I did not sand any of the rust off before applying.Within a couple of hours the 2" spot where i had brushed it on,turned a very dark color(almost black) and it seemed to smooth out the rust instead of being all rough and grainy. This was only surface rust that i applied this product too,i dont think this will work on heavy scaling rust.
Since the stuff appeared to do what it said on my old Chevy truck i brought it out to my newer Ford truck that had a small amount of surface rust on the bumper.I completely sanded off the rust down to the bare metal(probably didnt have to) and brushed on the Rustoleum Reformer. In about an hour i applied one more coat of this stuff to the bare metal.I let it dry for a couple of hours.I later checked on it and even with the rust being sanded off,the Rustoleum Reformer seemed to turn the bare metal a darker color but not completely black(just darker). It even seemed to smooth out the area so i could paint over it.A couple of hours later i used some touch up paint and painted over the Rust Reformer. The paint worked pretty well on top of it and after the paint dried it looked pretty good for a small backyard rust repair.
conclusion---this stuff does seem to do what it says.It will turn light surface rust into a darker color and smooth it out a bit. This stuff probably wont work on heavy scaly rust and i even think it says that on the bottle. Its easy to use, doesnt really have a nasty odor,it dries pretty quick, and it seems to smooth out the surface rust.I am willing to bet this stuff could be used as a "rust preventer" as well.Only time will tell on the longevity of this product,so i am only giving 4 stars.I will update with 5 stars after seeing how long this stuff actually lasts. This stuff is fairly cheap and it does what it says so i can recommend this product so far. This stuff is sold at typical hardware stores and i have found that the Rustoleum Rust Reformer comes in different style bottles and with different pictures on them. The Rustoleum Rust reformer i bought came in a small white bottle with a chair on the front of it.Even if you decide to use this stuff and you dont like how it performs, your only out a few bucks.
Restoration / Preservation toolbox standard September 8, 2009 S. Baldwin (San Diego) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found this product to be suitable for light rust conversion. Note: you must fully remove all rust scale for the product to be fully effective. I have used this and similar products repeatedly for auto and sheet metal preservation and restoration jobs. It does a good job of sealing metal pores after grinding and sanding away all surface rust. My typical uses include post-welding work, needle grinding, air-tool die grinding and powered angle grinder work. It seems to have similar active ingredients to comparable products from PERMATEX, LOCTITE and KLEEN-STRIP, and also to the naval product VACTAN. My overall results have been consistent, and this is excellent for surface prep prior to priming or spray painting.

This product is supposed to create a black scab when applied to rust, but it just formed rust.

I find the product very useful. I touch up chips on the car, outdoor furniture, as well as other metal items. Able to paint over it to match color.
